My Background:

Hi, I'm Kanwar. I completed my Master of Social Work at the University of Toronto, with a previous education in Cognitive Science and Psychology.

At Acorn and Anchor, I use approaches that best fit the unique needs of the people I work with. I work with clients ages 7 to adult, with particular experience supporting male-identified people of all ages. My approach has a relational, strengths-based focus, meaning that building a strong therapeutic relationship comes first. I then use a variety of evidence-based tools to support my clients in developing insight, including elements of Internal Family Systems, CBT, DBT, and Psychodynamic therapy, with a strong underpinning of neuroscience. When you are ready, we then explore aspects of your identity and discover how past experiences, relationships, and environment have had a profound impact on lifelong mental health and wellness. I work with all clients towards reaching a balanced association with their thoughts, feelings, and personal identity.

With younger clients, I also use art/play approaches to create a safe space that is exploratory, growth-oriented, and encourages positive patterns of emotional regulation, critical thinking, and problem-solving.

In my free time, I like to spend time outdoors. Everything from portage camping, road cycling, going for runs, to art, films, and music are some avenues that help me keep myself grounded and connected to others. I am a strong believer in the role of play, community involvement, and unstructured exploration as ways of developing resilience, wellness and a positive relationship with ourselves.
